Back in 3.5 I offered a supplement publication called “Weapons of Legacy” to mimic the 12 swords of strength (from the Nobel series by Fred Saberhagen).

You are watching: 12 swords of power

Using this supplement, my players attuned to the weapons and gained some instant abilities, and then gained an ext as lock leveled but the ability scaled with other magic tools of the appropriate level.

I’m considering taking this exact same idea right into a 5E homebrew setup but where magic weapons in 5E are substantially less frequent and also less powerful than they to be in 3.5 ns feel favor it could end up being OP very quickly.

My inquiry to the DMs of derekwadsworth.com is: what is a an excellent scaling device to boost APL by when using much more powerful artifact weapons that range with the pcs as castle level?

(I i do not know in an excellent conscience use the tools as created in the novels. I’ve read around that tactic acquiring out the control means too quickly)

I loved tools of legacy in 3.5, so lot that I practice made 2 of them for players in one of my projects after I obtained it.

I eyeballed power-level when I made a tradition version of the 5e divine Avenger recently. It to be for a bygone game, or I'd share the here. Ns guess my advice would certainly be look at the power level you desire it to finish up at and fake the rest.

I had taken into consideration quantifying the extra “artifact” style abilities and including 1/4 approximately 1/2 come the computer level for each computer that wields a sword (depending on the tools power).

Basically, the tools level v the player and are favor 1/2 a player due to the bonuses. This method my meet would scale appropriately.

I’m solid at flubbing rolls and also tactics as soon as I over execute it, and also if the party is OP, girlfriend can constantly bring in the reinforcements :)

I’m considering acquisition this very same idea right into a 5E homebrew setting but wherein magic tools in 5E are considerably less frequent and less an effective than they were in 3.5 i feel choose it could end up being OP very quickly.

If every one of the players have one the won't be an issue.

The Swords Of strength are artifacts made by gods. Many of them would be legendary-rarity. Letting them rest the campaign might not be the worst thing.

Anyways, the best strategy would most likely be to use the level break points in the PHB. Fifth level, 11th, and 17th (where fighters obtain extra attacks and cantrips obtain stronger). Monster stats and an obstacle ratings follow this breakpoints. Begin the swords as well balanced for uncommon-rarity until fifth level, where they come to be rare-rarity, and also at 11th-level they become really rare, and at 17th-level they come to be legendary.

So the end of curiosity, room you walk to keep the defect of the swords? like the one sword will certainly kill any kind of one person however then you lose the knife unless the person is appropriate there?

Farslayer.

Yes, the capability to send Farslayer right into the love of your enemy is represented, yet is not exactly the same. In my video game it may not kill your target. (So even an ext of a downside.)

For mine campaign, no all the tools were swords. I had actually maces, axes, quarter staff (woundhealer) and also Farslayer to be a Spear.

As Farslayer thrived in power (and you with splash to it) it boosted from a 1d6 come 1d10 damage, gained increase range, and gained +1 thru +3 and also the capacity to return to the thrower once per round.

Eventually, the wielder benefit the ability to speak the surname of a target they want dead. Then begin channeling concentration every round making a Wisdom Save beginning at DC 10.

Each round you succeed in ~ the save, you continue channeling the next round but the DC rises by 2. Eventually you will certainly fail the save.

On a failure save, Farslayer Rips from her hands and also streaks in the direction of your target, blinking from visibility as that teleports to them, plunging into their chest.

For each successful round that channeling you obtain a +1 to your strike roll vs the target, your vital chance because that the assault is diminished by -1, and also Farslayer deals it’s base damage to the target together if you will do thrown it.

So succeed in ~ 5 ring of channeling,

+5 to your strike roll

Critical of 15-20

Deal damages at 5x the normal damage value.

Like I said before, representing the weapons exactly is too much for a structured campaign.

Like, Townsavers downfall is you probably shed you life by utilizing it, mindsword will enthrall everyone and also your followers will starve come death.

I had to find a way to offer escalating services while still having actually some drawbacks.

Coin spinner was the easiest. Because that every accumulation day girlfriend wielded Coinspinner, I kept a tally.

Each tally to be .01% in ~ the start of each day, the player would roll 1d100 and also if the amount rolled was less than the tally coinspinner would vanish and teleport come a location.

I constructed the scale to 90 job (which was a 40.44% possibility of loss.

My player was very unlucky and also lost that on like day 63 v a role under 18.78%

The caveat was the Coinspinner just teleports 10 miles because that every percent the player misses by. The offered Wayfinder to situate it again and found that a couple of weeks later in the hands of one unknowing farmer who stated it was merely lying the end in his field one day. He offered it come them for 10gold as they told him it was a family members heirloom steal by hoodlums in the area.

Sorry so long. What i did through the campaign was a ton that fun and also seemed well balanced as i counted the swords as “extra” party members for the objective of conference building.
